With source control ... we use Source Safe. Intially, to first create your base classes, create it as a project in your current Solution. In VSS, share all the files in this project between all our applications in VSS. Whenever you work on a new application, you share these base classes, via VSS, and voila! you then add that project to your new Solution. It stays in sync because you get the files from VSS.

Ah - you create them in a Project! I think this was what I was missing - as I said before, I couldn't see how to code a standalone class. I think what you have described above is what I was looking for (something about old foxes and new tricks should be inserted here :-)).
