NEVER SAY NEVER :) . The rule is that each index expression should has the same fixed length. ALLTRIM() certainly is a threat but an index expression of:
INDEX ON PADR(ALLTRIM(FirstName)+ALLTRIM(LastName),40)
is perfectly valid.
