I think you're absolutely right in this. A database server should be a database server. This way you're poluting the server with stuff that really does not belong there. I already have the opinion that SPs are missused a lot because a lot of functionality does not really belong on the server, but on a middle tier or the client.
Esspecially when having high isolation levels like serializable SPs that waste time on doing application tasks could cause a lot of lock contention or even dealocks. It is way better trying to keep your database server clean for unneccary application specific tasks: Performance will benefit from it.
