Does anyone here have experience of displaying streaming data on the web?

A consultant working with me has said that our only option is to use Java to do the streaming.

Essentially what we need is a means of displaying financial quotes over the web, with things like indicative colours if numbers go up or down etc.

Any pointers would be most useful. I find it hard to believe that the only option is Java...
