I believe this behavior started with VFP7, and the reason for the change was that the caption in VFP7 and higher actually could be evaluated, so you can use caption=time() or other functions. The trick is to use =' =', notice the space before the second =, which at least works in VFP8. In VFP9 you can use ='=' (without the extra space).
