I don't know about the specifics of your setup. In my experience, a WXP workstation set up as a member of a W2K domain basically *requires* that the PDC be its sole DNS server. I recall reading somewhere that a W2K DNS server supports some RFC that XP workstations use in this context, and that the vast majority of commercial ISP DNS servers (i.e. non-Windows) do not support. So, if the WS DNS is set to your ISP's DNS servers, XP wastes a lot of time trying to send updates to these DNS servers, which reject or ignore them, causing the long delays.
The fact that you have this problem with XP workstations, and not with W2K workstations leads me to believe this may be your problem. This is exactly what I have experienced in the past - XP W/Ss are very fussy, W2K are not.
Basically, if you set up DNS as per the MSKB article I referenced, everything works great.
