Hello Jon,

>I have considered contracting in the past, but because my main skill is Fox never really felt that there was enough work to do this.

I have been contracting for the past 15 years, working from home most of the time. The flexible lifestyle it enables me and my family means that I would be loathed to give it up to become a 'permie', but one can never-say-never. 4 years ago contracting rates were very high for experienced VFP developers (up to £50ph), but most of the jobs I see today offer less than half of that.

>But I am getting more exposure to SQL Server and if I ever thought about going contracting then I would re-brand myself as a SQL Server developer.
>
>Could you not look at doing this? With SQL I have been looking from not only a development role but also an Administrators role and learning about the installation and configuration.

I appreciate installation and configuration are necessary, but they don't interest me much. It's the development side of things that I enjoy.

I was fortunate enough to have been involved in a VFP frontend, SQL backend project over the past 3 years, so I learned SQL on-the-job. I would call myself proficent at SQL, but I'm not sure I could position SQL as top of my list of skills yet. Still, there's only one way to find out...

>Your posting was really interesting to me, I originally come from Tavistock (just across the moors from you) and had to move away to get a job.
>The opportunites around there arent great and I dont know if I'll ever be able to move back.

I was near Tavistock today! Nice place, but I don't think I'd like to live there! Even in nearby Plymouth there are very few software development companies, and very few that have even heard of VFP.

>Personnally I think there are still some untapped markets in the UK but its just getting things together in order to tap in.

Want to share some ideas for these untapped markets (reply privately if you wish)? I don't have any ideas at all in that area, but I wish I did.

>Just for your info there is a company in the Newton Abbott area that uses Fox, dont know if they may have any perm jobs going. I can let you have the details if your interested.

Yes please, that would be great. I look forward to receiving them.

Regards,
Alan
