Personally, I do almost NO editing directly within the grid, using the grid to get an overview, and for quickly locating the appropriate record.

The Column in the Grid which shows the memo field should have a ControlSource similar to:
padr(MyMemoField, 100)
Note: Perhaps left(...) would do just as well, but personally, I need a fixed-width field, for purposes of the framework used.
