Hi Denis,

>About that "working on site" culture it's not only an England problem. Perhaps that could also be explained by frustrated bosses (not necessarily big bosses)that are frustrated because they have to be there. And not only that but they
have to be there very early too.

>So perhaps there's a line of thought like "If I have to suffer over this situation I'll take them all with me" <vbg>

You could be right. Those managers who insist you are in the office have probably never had the experience of anything other than the routine 9-5 (or longer) themselves. Unlike them, I want to see as much of my family as possible, not just at weekends!

The culture of remote working may really take-off when governments restrict the use of cars on the roads in an effort to cut-down pollution. Employers will then be forced to act then, or risk losing their work-force. I am constantly amazed by the distance people are willing to travel (not forgetting commuting time and costs) 5 days a week in order to do something that they could do just as easily (and probably more efficiently) at home.

>On a serious note: I understand that you have to really trust someone before letting him work from home. Perhaps some have more problems than others with that "trust" thing.

I agree, but when developing applications or writing programs there is a tangible product at the end that you can deliver to the client to prove that they haven't been paying all that money for you to sit on your *** all day! Bug hunting/fixing is not so easy - some take 2 minutes, some take 2 hours! I find the most understanding clients are those who have done development themselves.

I also have to ask myself, would I feel happy working for someone who didn't trust me? If not, it doesn't bode well for a good working relationship.

>It could also be a business mentality thing.

Definitely. I would have thought that the IT industry would be at the forefront of this type of working, but I think other industries are ahead in allowing employees to work from home.

Regards,
Alan
