Wouldn't be easier and consistent to always use XML?

I am seeing something like this : before a stored procedure gets called, I check whether the database is VFP and there are more than 26 parameters, and only in this case, call a custom function which transforms my parameter list into just one parameter containing XML text (then some work is to be done on the database side as well). Of what type should this one parameter be ? adLongVarChar ?
