I was hoping there would have been another way, maybe not as full inheritance, but something that would have brought us close such as subclassing regular controls.
Whenever you run into a situation where you can't inherit from a class you have to create a wrapper class around it where you can inherit from - we've had to do this in many cases where we're using 3rd party product.
