We use the SMS features of GFI Faxmaker with a WaveCom 1206 modem. It works great.

If you wanted to you could get a modem like the 1206 and talk to it directly (you will find people who have have to talk to com ports with VFP). I have actually sent a few SMS messages via a terminal program with AT commands to test the modem - it isn't hard.
