Is the xml file in question in a different directory than the project that you are adding it to?
If your answer is yes: If you add a new existing item to a project the file that is added is copied into the project directory (please verify that this is happening). What I think you want to do is to link the file to the project, ie. add the file to the project but leave it in it's current location. If this is what you want to do you need to add a new existing item but before you click the open button in the file select dialog notice that the open button has a little arrow on the right side click the litte arrow and choose link file.

Hope this makes sense and that I am trying to solve the correct problem.

>I have an XML file in my solution explorer. Whenever I update that file, externally to the project, I have to exlude that file from the project, add a new existing item and reclick on it to get the update. Is there an easier way to udpate the content of the XML without having to do this step?
