Typically, as Rod mentioned, connections over a WAN are slow. But, if you connect to your datasource via a Web Service, all your data access is already server-side and will be much faster.
Also, as Kevin mentioned, Web Services are very easy to create in .NET and Microsoft is definitely headed in that direction.
With a Web Service access to your datasource, it's also easy to allow other applications to your data.
