In the long run SQL - Server (or another server RDBMS) might be the best option. In the short term Terminal services (Citrix or another remote control solution) is quiker (you don't have to rewrite anything).
If you compare SQL server and TS (or citrix or ...) they have different advantages and disadvantages. Of all our clients (Europe and North america) we demand a TS connection so we can get on their server and do our miantenance up there. With SQL server alone you cannot update maintain anything, but the SQL server database, with TS you can maintain your whole application.
