I embraced the black on white as computers became capable of displaying it, but since I've started working with Linux machines sans-gui, I find that I don't tire as quickly when working with a black background. This is especially true in the dim surroundings I like to work in.

Kind of makes sense...a white screen is like turning your monitor up full blast to tell you absolutely nothing....THEN the text comes in as kind of an afterthought. "Lets totally redline their optical system before we give them any info."

I think that white on black was a marketing thing that targeted non-computer people back in the day. I doubt that any consideration was ever given to whether it made things easier to read.
