I can think of two things.

1) Using SourceSafe through the VFP project manager does a GET on all the files in the project and removes the READ-ONLY flag. The project manager does the policing of checking out the files before allowing you to modify them.

2) There is an option within SourceSafe that will prevent the files from being marked READ-ONLY when you do a GET or CHECK-IN.
