You might want to consider using a RV. RV fields do not require the same labels or field types as the underlying table. Conversion is automatic. We use this a lot to pull blobs into memo fields (simply set the RV field type as memo rather than general and it works) or to pull datetime fields as dates for date-only displays or manipulation. When you save the field it is converted back into the correct type automagically as well. If you use standard ANSI SQL it is easy to make the same RV work against multiple remote backends.
