What you say is true--that you don't really know if a person is online; however you have a much more accurate picture on the UT than an "average site", because of the auto-refresh stuff that runs in the toolbar.
Of course, being on-line doesn't mean paying attention either. With tabbed browsers, it's really easy to completely forget you're logged in here.
