Sergio,
Thanks, that's a good idea. I immediately discovered another fix that works too. Since I'm feeding the beast from a table with allt(field), I get variable length data, of course, and that is the problem. LEFTing the field to fix the length looks fine.

It's funny how often I see the obvious solution only after I've given up and publicly proclaimed my ignorance to the world! Thanks again.
