A circle of 400 grads is easier to calculate than the one with 360 degrees. Specially where the division of a degree is not decimal but occurs in those (nautical?) base-60 subunits.

Well, with today's machines (and actually, with those of 30 years ago as well), it's no problem to convert units... which is the probable reason why all those funny units still survive.
