Thanks for that. I've just realised that I'd practically answered my own question. In moving to XP SP2 (and a new 'puter - which I'd forgotten) I hadn't yet changed my date mark to "-" in Regional Settings. Now I have it's OK. However, you're right in that "Short Date" would override my British setting with whatever the user has his Regional Settings set to
