I used a freebie that came with my video card (actually worked great in Windows XP) but I eventually stopped using it because I would accidentally switch desktops and panic on where my stuff went to. Now I just use multiple monitors instead and leave it all on one desktop.

Once a particular desktop is selected, all other windows are hidden. Any window is assigned to one desktop; it is also possible to have "global" windows, which appear in all desktops.
