If it has variable length fields, it must keep their lengths somewhere, therefore I think it may have a function to retrieve that length. So,

...vp_custcd = "U6" and len(vp_custcd=2)

or something along that line. Of course, the len() may be called SizeOF(), ShoeSize() or whatever in Michael's server's dialect of SQL.
