I agree with your message! Do not breath for 6 days. It is Carnival! As a Catholic I have thought of this event as a proper pagan right of spring. It is a good diversion for the poor as they spend much time and effort to prepare and show off during Carnival. The rich and not so rich get to enjoy being a pagan until Ash Wednesday, for those who are “believers”. Some people are pagans the entire year – this is a time of celebration!

In the United States New Orleans celebrates “Mardi Gras” as does France, and on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the worst part of the event occurs. That is to say that I am giving a value judgment about this topic and my thoughts do not seem to be in the main stream.

Different countries carry out this rite of spring and another country that does so is Germany, and is called Fastnacht. So we have a religious motivation to raise hell before Lent begins and then be “holy” until Easter, when you can go back to business as usual – raising hell!

Carnival is a distraction for society to not face reality, a means of self-indulgence and a celebration of hypocrisy as well as much more that I will not discuss on the Internet! :)
