I believe the root word in carnival ('carne' in Portuguese) refers to abstaining from eating meat during Lent, which of course offers an excuse to eat lots of meat and to otherwise over-indulge oneself during the few days preceding Lent. The other connotation is not directly implied but is probably not inappropriate given how carnival and other pre-Lenten celebrations are celebrated in some places. FWIW I did not see carnival in Rio as dehumanizing, just a big party.
