i know that at least in germany they play football too (http://www.football-fan.de/include.php?path=start.php - germen language). however its not very much known, at least i never heard of it until i came to the USA.

American Football is originated from soccer and rugby (http://www.footystamps.com/orig_index.htm). Rugby, from what i've seen ais a lot more vilent.
