Try (on another machine, maybe) with a different printer driver. I've seen this being a bug in some versions of HP's drivers, but it was very long ago. The problem was in the level of the PCL, which wasn't able to suppress graphics, or in any way impose white over black. Maybe that's not the exact issue here, but may well be something of the kind.
