No. The CDX file contains plaintext images of the data. If you decrypt it to build the index someone can snoop the CDX and build the data from it. If you create temp views you are still going to have decrypted data on a drive somewhere in the temp directory. I don't have any good ideas to solve your problem though.

If not, is it practical to create indexes on the fly to change the order of the data displayed in a grid? For example, I have three fields for patient name and one for SSN that will all be encrypted. When the user clicks on the header of any of the name columns, I want to display the patients in alphabetical order by name.
