I have done this on several occasions. There are several approaches however I really think you would be ahead of the game my using a good framework like Visual MaxFrame Professional or any of the other fine frameworks. It will take less time, be more stable, easier to modify, update and add features to with a framework.

Using a framework is also a good way to learn OOP. The learning curve to learn how to be productive with a framework is less than going in cold! :)
