From main menu - Tool/Options
...then in the pop-up window, goto the IDE tab...
in the lower left there is a checkbox there ... 'compile before saving' - make sure it's selected.

Did you click the 'set as default' button? It's also possible your VFP resource .dbf file is corupted - in which case you could just delete it.
There is also the 'enviornment manager' located in the Task Pane of VFP8 - sometime when you get a chance you might want to play around with it as it allows you to setup pathing/file-locations based on your projects.
