Rick,
>>However, I'd also venture to guess that things that are proprietary often are the kind of things that are not 'servicable'.
I'm working on one now. The "result" has an obvious benefit but it has proven unbelievably difficult to get it right. We patented our version in 1995 and again in 1998 (shows you how long it has taken to get it right!)

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
