What if the players don't negotiate their salary with the team but with the NHL main board? You won't need a salary cap and the NHL will have the balance of power in the negociation (think Wal-Mart). Not that I like Wal-Mart (I hate them as a matter of fact), but you would have a really hard time convincing me that you deserve to be a millionaire. And that goes for any kind of job you do.
