I don't of the exact derivation of the term, but if you're "behind the 8-ball" that means that you're in trouble. It probably has something to do with the a version of pool (pocket billiards) known as 8-ball. Being behind the 8-ball is a very bad thing because it normally means you have no decent shot available.

I haven't seen the term "ahead of the 8-ball" (I'd have probably used "ahead of the curve") used before, so I'll leave it to someone else to explain the context here.
