There's no such thing as "notepad file". Notepad defaults to *.txt files, but it can open anything; the same files can be open with many other applications. IOW, Notepad doesn't have its own format of files. It's just the default simple applet for text files.

I've opened files as large as few hundred K in Notepad... but mostly for viewing. If it's any search&replace that needs to be done, I'd recommend using Modify Command or Modify File from Fox - it's incomparably faster than Notepad, because Notepad keeps refreshing its display after each replace. And I've successfully edited files of several megabytes in size in Fox's editors, starting with FP1.02 on a 286, never had a problem. It may take a while to do, if the size of the file is larger than available memory, but it gets done.
