In truth that's only part of it and I would say a minor part at this point (at least with VFP) since the best development, from my point of view, are frameworks for using mtdlls, debugging COM, supporting PDFs, better web integration, better interop with .NET. All this is being done or has been done by the community without a heavy investment in C programming!

Maybe we have different concepts of 'Open Source' - to me it would mean that MS makes available the source code used to compile (for example) vfp9.exe..
