Put those lines in a program and then execute the program and you will see the desired results. If you are trying to do them in the command window you need to copy and paste them in the command window, then highlight all the lines, then right-click and pick "execute".

Because the command window is interactive with each command that is typed. That's just the way the command window works, it is very different than executing code in a .PRG.
