THis is one situation where it seems someone in the "office" has a second cousin that sells hardware.

You - as a consultant - need to step up to the plate - write a simple one pager indicating why all that stuff is not needed - and that your solution will scale when they really need it.

THere are lot of issues with "over configuration" including cost and down times should something fail. Give `em the ole "KISS" (Keep it simple stupid) argument.

You could even suggest - lets build the project with a minimal configuration - the (and if) more capcity is needed it can be added at that time. You could also remind that technology is always moving forward, and they could be stuck with something "old" if they make all the purchases now. You might also remind that Power Builder's best days were several years back. Maybe ACC-PAC (that is a VFP app that can be integrate with any "special" VFP software you might develop for them).

It sounds like someone graduated from an IT course about 4 years ago.:)

You're their consultant. You will tread a thin line - but as long as they understand you have their best interests at heart - they will listen - maybe not change their mind.
Powerbuilder - yukk - lot's of time and no sex appeal!
