Gee Jess,

Up here in a VFP forum, and you had questions about what answer you would get?<g>

As for PB or Delphi, I can tell you that SBT created a PB version their accounting software which is also in VFP. You may want to talk to those folks as that is the only scenario I know of where something in FPW/VFP was migrated to PB. As for Delphi, it is a very good product. However, if you a hessitant going toward VB, why the comfort level with Delphi. Object Pascal is a bit more complicated than basic. But, Delphi is a nice development platform. I think the issues with that product had more to do with the company than the technology.

As for deciding between VFP and VB, it depends. From a UI standpoint, if you need ActiveX support, thing long and hard before comitting to VFP. Fact is, many ActiveX controls do not work correctly with VFP. This extends to controls that ship with Visual Studio.

If you need middle tier support, VB servers are far more scaleable than thier VFP counterparts.

As far as data access goes, remote views in VFP are highly overrated as the granularity of control is not there. Most of the good C/S apps I have seen and ones I have worked on - use SQL Pass Through. Keep in mind that ADO is here - which is based on the Fox Engine. VB - from a UI standpoint - is much better equiped to work with this technology. So, the fact that VFP has native data access may or may not be an advantage.

Yes, VFP has OO and VFP's object model is much better than VB's object model. But, if you can't get an ActiveX control to work correctly, who the heck will care about OO<s>.

Put simply, VB is a better client/server front end than VB - and I am not sure anybody has said this in the thead yet. Even Delphi is a better C/S front end. You are up here asking a question - and you should be told this.

Another advantage of VB is the footprint. The front-ends are much lighter than VFP intefaces.

The point is, don't dismiss other tools because of the current state of your skill set. The question you asked is which is better, not which one you should use.

If you need to crunch something out - and the timeline is tight - and you have to use VFP - then I guess you have no choice. But, if you have time to make a choice, then be sure you have all of the facts.

Where is my convert John Koziol when I need him<g>
