I am looking to output a book to a Xerox 4635 high speed laser printer. Optimally I would like to be able to send the same output to a desktop HP printer, the 4050 or 4100 for example. I would need to print a cover using a special stock in the manual feed tray on an HP or trays 1 or 2 on the Xerox. This entails sending multiple reports in a single report stream. A cover report, followed by the bulk of the book, followed by a back cover. Using the printer driver to select feed trays has proven to be difficult. The Xerox driver is complicated and unreliable and on the HP only the tray selection for the first report is used and in the following chained reports tray settings are ignored. Also if the manual tray becomes empty the printer will print covers from the main feed tray as the paper size is the same.

The solution I am looking at will generate a PCL or PS report file that utilizes the ‘paper stock type’ setting. On the Xerox if a PCL or PS command calls for a certain stock the printer will automatically pull stock from the correct trays. Hopefully the same solution will work the HP but developing a solution for the Xerox is the priority.
