Jay;
I had a problem the other day with IE 6 and the Internet. I went to:
Tools
Connections
LAN Settings
Automatic configuration
Automatically detect settings, and checked this one.
All was (is) well.
Two weeks ago I had a problem with McAfae Firewall upon installation. I had to allow it to let IE work! :)
By the way the December edition of ZoneAlarm truned off the Internet for me. Who needs an anti virus or firewall program if you cannot access the Internet? This is such fun!
Hope you find the problem!

>Worked with Dell for an hour last night on a rebuilt PC. IE will not work - cannot find page error - but we get good pings (all 4 replies received back) and Outlook mail is working. We checked everything I could think of and finally came down to running some/all of these utilities:

>LSPFix.exe
>WinsockFix.exe
