My feeling is that it is something peculiar to my using a server as a workstation!.

When I make a web reference, it will not allow an ip address. It will only accept tiger2, with and without its associated domain. It then asks for username and password. I have tried using the same combination I am currently logged in with or using an entirely different log in name. Sometimes this appears in the security event viewer as a successful login, sometimes not. I have tried it with and without anonymous access turned on in IIS - once this showed up as a login.

What I do not see in the security event viewer are failed logins corresponding to all the 401 errors.

Nothing makes too much sense now

I have downloaded an update for the compact framework but I have not yet found out how to install it!
