You might want to start with Tamar's book on office automation from VFP.

Between that and hacking around via intellisense, you can learn alot. Also, in the past I've seen some poster-sized diagrams of the Word object model. Not sure if these are still around, but I remember them being helpful years ago.

Aside from that, try asking questions here. There are also newsgroups on office that are pretty good.
