It is always a pleasure to read Tom's code. (With a note of wistfulness, of course; he should still have another good 15 or 20 years with a normal lifespan). The word that immediately comes to mind is "elegant." Even the spacing and indentation are pleasing to the eye. And I particularly admired his use of comments. He didn't waste them where they weren't needed and didn't hesitate to go on for several lines if that was what it took. He had a keen sense of appropriate response.
I don't know whether you were on the old Compuserve FoxForum (perhaps as a lurker) when Tom passed but I can tell you the little corner of the world inhabited by FoxPro developers tilted on its axis. The only events I remember approaching it were the death of Doug Dodge's son Jonathan and the death of Tom Piper. We were all in shock. Tom was so vibrant, so full of life, we couldn't believe he was gone, not at that age. Tributes poured in from all over and you could almost read the tears between the lines. For some reason the one that sticks most in my mind was from Mike Feltman. Mike told about Tom giving him hours of advice about how to build a product and how to run a business, even though Mike's FoxExpress was a direct competitor to TRO. Tom just had that generosity of spirit. He still inspires me whenever I see his name.
