While it's entirely possible Paul is correct, you may want to verify this is the case by setting a breakpoint just before the "magic" happens in the framework code and look at the statement .NET is sending to VFP for update.
Then, I would suggest running that exact command in VFP's command window and see what it does. You'll probably (or maybe "hopefully") get much better error information other than the woefully generic "syntax error" message.
