When we began basic training in the Air Force, they pulled aside all Catholic and Jewish personnel. We were told that we were given dispensation regarding our diet.
Because we were in the military we were to eat what we were given. That was not a comfortable discussion! Then again Air Force food was nothing to rave about! :)
