vfp 3.0 win 95

Anytime I get blank records in the database file,
they will contain a number in first field but the
rest of the fields are blank, program goes weird
on me, and doesn't work properly.

Why do the blank fields cause problems? What is the
best way to correct this? database files are free tables
and set exclusive is on.
