The IP addresses being similar (i.e., the same subnet) would apply if they are on the same router interface (port). If they are on different router interfaces, one router interface and the computer(s) that connect to it should be on one subnet (e.g. 192.168.1.x), but another router interface and the computer(s) that connect to it, should be on a different subnet (e.g. 192.168.2.x).
This is how we always configure Cisco routers in the laboratory; I think the principle would be the same for any other brand, although the exact commands can vary.
