blog is just short for "weB-LOG", and means a place where you write down anything that comes to your mind. I understand it is more or less like a diary, but open to the public.

As such, it isn't really anything new, IMNSHO; many people have been writing whatever comes to mind into their Web-sites. What is new is: (1) the use of the term "blog", (2) a general trend to make it more available, in an organized way, to the public, through software, specially designed sites, etc.
