I could understand where's he coming from if he wasn't supposed to be teaching a class. If you teach, you have an obligation to your students to be current. Now, if teaching isn't his profession and he's just doing it on the side to a few people here and there, that'd be one thing. But, it sounded to me like you meant he was teaching classes on a regular basis.
